The Last to Let Go SHADOWS IT’S THE END OF JUNE. A Friday. Like any other day, except hotter. I take my usual shortcut home from school through the alley, where the air is dense and unbreathable, saturated with the raw smell of overheated dumpster garbage. I can taste it in the back of my throat like an illness coming on. But this is the last time I’ll ever need to take this route, I remind myself. Almost instantly that invisible yet ever-present straitjacket begins to loosen its grip just enough for me to breathe a little easier. I’ve been counting down the days for years. Not that school itself was ever the problem. It’s all the people in the school who are the problem. Or maybe, as I sometimes think, the problem might have been me all along. Occam’s razor, and everything. Isn’t it simpler that the problem should be one person versus hundreds, rather than the other way around? Logically, maybe. But then, if I’m really going to think about it—which, I’ve decided, I’m not—me being the problem is the opposite of simple. As I step out of the shaded alley and onto the sidewalk, the sun blasts down in a cascade of heat and light. I stop and roll my jeans up to my knees, while my shadow pools at my feet like a small gray puddle. When my brother, Aaron, and I were little, we always kept a vigilant watch over our shadows, convinced that one day they’d splinter off like in Peter Pan and run amok, committing all sorts of treacherous deeds without our consent. But that was a lifetime ago. I doubt he even remembers. As I stand up, my forehead is instantly beaded with sweat, the back of my shirt dampened under the weight of my backpack. Usually I can’t stand the heat, but today it doesn’t bother me. Nothing can right now. Because I just aced my AP Bio final. I’m officially done with Riverside High. And I’ll be starting my junior year, the most important year, at Jefferson—the special charter school that’s had me wait-listed since eighth grade—with all new people. Where no one knows me. Where I can focus, get ahead, and start my life already. I’ve wanted to go there ever since I found out about all the AP classes they offer. I’ve thought about it for roughly a million hours. I worked out a plan and now it’s finally happening: I’ll graduate from Jefferson, get in to an amazing college somewhere far away, and then get out of this hellhole for good. I feel a hitch in my step. I involuntarily skip ahead on my toes. This feels like a moment I should be celebrating with my friends, if I had any. Because I’m free, almost. A siren chirps once. Twice. I look up just as the red and blue lights begin spinning, in time to watch the patrol car go from parked to sixty in a matter of seconds, the noise shifting the heavy air around me. The heat radiates from the pavement through the rubber soles of my flip-flops as I skip over the crumbling blacktop, sidestepping the potholes I’ve practically memorized over the years. The sirens fade into the distance, but within seconds that patrol car is followed by five more, then a fire truck, then an ambulance, leaving the air too still in their wake. I follow the procession of emergency vehicles, systematically reviewing my answers on DNA and RNA and the endocrine system, and cell division: prophase, metaphase, anaphase. For six blocks of brick and cement and glass-window storefronts, the sun beats down on my hair and face, my shadow following along behind me the whole way. I only wish I could’ve known that these were the last relatively carefree moments of my life, because as my heel turns ninety degrees on that last corner to our apartment, nothing will ever be the same again. The six police cars and the fire truck and the ambulance are all jammed into the narrow alley next to our building. Although there are seven other apartments in our building, I can feel it in my bones and skin and blood, this is not about any of the other people behind any of those seven other doors. This is about us. I try to run but it feels like I’m moving through water, my feet sinking into wet sand, my legs getting tangled up in strands of seaweed wanting to pull me under. I don’t care that I’ve lost my flip-flops, or that the sunbaked asphalt is boiling the soles of my feet, or that somehow my backpack has shuffled off me and is now lying in the middle of the road like a dead animal, with all those precious study materials inside. I race through the door and up the stairs, calling her name over and over again. Mom. I make it up only to the first landing before I’m caught by the waist, a voice shouting in my ear to “calm down, calm down.” I try to fight him, but it’s no use. “Brooke,” he says firmly, calling me by my name. “Hold still, all right—wait!” I know exactly who it is without even having to look. Tony. He told me I could call him that when I was in fourth grade and one of our neighbors had called the cops on us. It was the time Dad broke Mom’s collarbone and Mom convinced the police she had fallen down the stairs. That was one of the few times I’d ever seen him cry about what he’d done; he melted into a puddle, and swore—swore to all of us, swore to a god I’m not sure he even believed in—never again. I didn’t know which version of him scared me more, the crazy one or the sorry one. We’ve been through this enough times to know that the cops don’t pull out all the stops like this for a simple noise complaint from a neighbor, especially when that neighbor is a cop himself. Which can mean only one thing: It’s finally happened. Aaron always said it was only a matter of time. Tony opens his mouth, the words to explain escaping him. Mrs. Allister, in 2B, inches her door open, the chain-link lock pulled taut in front of her face. She stares out at me with her wide, red-rimmed eyes, her chin quivering, her mouth turning downward as she whimpers my name. “I didn’t know what to do,” she pleads in her own defense. “I didn’t know what else to do.” Mrs. Allister was always the one to call the cops, until the one time when I was in seventh grade and I barged into her apartment, yelling about how even though she thought she was helping, she was only making things worse. Calling the police never did any good, I tried to make her understand, because he was one of them. Mrs. Allister cried then, too. As far I know, she never called again. Until now. “Ma’am, back inside right now!” Tony demands. And Mrs. Allister retreats like a turtle back into its shell. The door clicks shut, the dead bolt sliding into place. Then suddenly a whole swarm of cops in bulletproof vests barrel down the stairs toward us, shouting, “Outta the way, move, outta the way, get her outta here.” I think they mean me at first, but before I even know what’s happening next, Tony has my back pinned against Mrs. Allister’s door, shielding me as they pass by us like a hurricane of bodies. That’s when I see her, my little sister, like a ghost encircled by these gray uniforms, each one with a hand on her. I loved The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and therefore could not wait to get my hands on its sequel. It was, simply put, a pleasure to read. Fantastic characters, funny dialogues and a thrilling plot made this book one of my favourite reads over the holidays. Alone some themes which appeared very preachy to me in the manner they were told could have used some subtlety.

I love Mackenzie Lee and her books. Didn't like it quite as much as the first book, but it's a great and funny sequel. Highly recommend reading it.

The book arrived in perfect condition the day after I ordered it, and was amazingly good value for a brand new product. I am very satisfied and would order with them again!

Felicity mochte ich schon im Vorgänger sehr und war sehr gespannt auf ihre Geschichte und ich habe alles bekommen, was ich wollte. Ich liebe es, dass sie weiß, was sie will und konkrete Ziele für ihr Leben hat. Vor allem deshalb, weil das ganz und gar nicht die sind, die andere für sie festgelegt haben, denn sie kann sich nichts schlimmeres vorstellen, als zu heiraten und ihr Leben zu Hause und ohne sinnvollen Zweck zu verbringen. Auch dass man es ihr wirklich schwer macht, ihre Träume zu verwirklichen, hält sie nicht ab und sie sucht nach immer neuen Wegen, es trotzdem zu schaffen, was ich sehr beeindruckend und inspirierend finde.Dabei ist sie allerdings nicht perfekt, denn sie ist zu Beginn sehr festgefahren in ihren Denkmustern und hat einige Vorurteile. Positiv vermerken muss man dabei, dass sie sich weiterentwickelt und viele ihrer Ansichten ändert oder anpasst. Neben Felicity haben mir auch die anderen Charaktere sehr gefallen, denn keiner von ihnen ist flach oder leicht durchschaubar und jeder von ihnen konnte mich mindestens ein mal mit seinen Handlungen überraschen.Durch die Handlung festgelegt ist schon, dass das Buch feministische Botschaften enthält und es gibt einige Zitate, die ich fantastisch fand und die man auch in der heutigen Zeit noch 1:1 so übernehmen kann. Dabei ist natürlich klar, dass das Buch aktuell ist, aber wie die Autorin im Nachwort erklärt, ist das auch für das achtzehnte Jahrhundert keineswegs abwegig, denn auch da haben sich Frauen natürlich schon benachteiligt gefühlt und haben sich nicht protestlos ihrer geschriebenen Rolle gefügt.Neben den Charakteren hat mir auch die Handlung generell sehr gefallen. Die Spannung steigt und sinkt, aber ich hatte zu jeder Zeit das Bedürfnis, möglichst schnell weiterzulesen. Der Verlauf war für mich ziemlich unvorhersehbar und ich wurde das eine oder andere Mal wirklich überrascht.

This book is an absolutely worthy sequel of ‘The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue’ which I loved. It’s about Monty’s sister Felicity who is trying to become a doctor. Because this turns out to be even harder than anticipated she travels the world to find her place in it.The plot was super exciting, the characters are so real seeming and their developments are really fascinating to read about. It’s a very socially critical book which makes it even more interesting. Defintely a recommendation!

Genialer Wurf. Brutaler Abbruch des Vergnügens. Bleibt in der Schwerelosigkeit der Parabel. Unerlässlich, das nächste Buch zu lesen - und Matthes & Seitz Berlin hat acht davon.

Witzig geschrieben, aber völliger Humbug. Nicht lesenswert.

Kurz vor seinem Tod vermacht der alte Zauberer Tenor seinen letzten Trick dem Ewigen Buddha. Der junge Jurist Jean Ball reist aus der Schweiz nach Indien, um die Erbschaft zu überbringen, und vertreibt sich auf der langen Schiffsreise die Zeit mit der schönen Inderin Palmyra. Er übergibt die Beschreibung des Zaubertricks dem Ewigen Buddha, der sie allerdings in seinem häuslichen Chaos verlegt und bald vergisst. Auf seiner Rückreise in die Schweiz verabschiedet sich Jean Ball aufgrund von Gewissensbissen nicht von Palmyra. Im letzten Kapitel, einer Novelle in der Novelle, nehmen die Monotheisten den Ewigen Buddha gefangen und seine Haushälterin weigert sich, ihn zu befreien.Das ist die gesamte Handlung dieses schmalen Bändchens. Mehr passiert nicht und das scheint mir doch ein wenig dünn, obwohl ich kein Action-Junkie bin. Dabei habe ich den Eindruck, dass Cesar Aira sich einen Spaß daraus macht, beim Publikum erst Erwartungen zu wecken und diese dann zu enttäuschen. So verweigert er im letzten Kapitel ausdrücklich das "große Finale". Meiner Meinung nach kann er sich deshalb nicht beschweren, wenn sein Werk zwar von den Kritiker*innen gelobt, von normalen Leser*innen wie mir jedoch nicht weiterempfohlen wird.Ich bitte, mich nicht falsch zu verstehen: Natürlich kann Cesar Aira schreiben und ich habe mich bei der Lektüre auch nicht wirklich gelangweilt. Aber ich hätte mich garantiert über das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis geärgert, wenn ich dieses Büchlein gekauft und nicht nur ausgeliehen hätte.

Jack Gantos has written books for people of all ages, from picture books and middle-grade fiction to novels for young adults and adults. His works include Hole in My Life, a memoir that won the Michael L. Printz and Robert F. Sibert Honors, Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key, a National Book Award Finalist, Joey Pigza Loses Control, a Newbery Honor book, and Dead End in Norvelt, winner of the Newbery Medal and the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction. Jack was raised in Norvelt, Pennsylvania, and when he was seven, his family moved to Barbados. He attended British schools, where there was much emphasis on reading and writing, and teachers made learning a lot of fun. When the family moved to south Florida, he found his new classmates uninterested in their studies, and his teachers spent most of their time disciplining students. Jack retreated to an abandoned bookmobile (three flat tires and empty of books) parked out behind the sandy ball field, and read for most of the day. The seeds for Jack's writing career were planted in sixth grade, when he read his sister's diary and decided he could write better than she could. He begged his mother for a diary and began to collect anecdotes he overheard at school, mostly from standing outside the teachers' lounge and listening to their lunchtime conversations. Later, he incorporated many of these anecdotes into stories. While in college, he and an illustrator friend, Nicole Rubel, began working on picture books. After a series of well-deserved rejections, they published their first book, Rotten Ralph, in 1976. It was a success and the beginning of Jack's career as a professional writer. Jack continued to write children's books and began to teach courses in children's book writing and children's literature. He developed the master's degree program in children's book writing at Emerson College and the Vermont College M.F.A. program for children's book writers. He now devotes his time to writing books and educational speaking. He lives with his family in Boston, Massachusetts.

Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz, geboren 1915, emigrierte 1935 gemeinsam mit seiner Mutter zunächst nach Skandinavien, wo sein erster Roman »Menschen neben dem Leben« erschien. Trotz seiner jüdischen Wurzeln wurde er in England als »enemy alien« interniert und starb 1942 durch einen deutschen Torpedoangriff bei einem Schiffstransport.

Hokkaido native Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (1947-) is a Japanese animator and manga artist. His career as a character designer has spanned over four decades, creating famed characters for such anime as Super Atragon, Brace Raideen, and the widely known Mobile Suit Gundam. Considered a pivotal player in mecha and sci-fi anime, Yasuhiko's characters, stories and illustrations are unmistakable in their style and serve as timeless examples as pioneers of manga and animation in Japan.  Yasuhiko began his career as an animator in Osama Tezuka's Mushi Productions, and later on decided to go freelance to work for a number of animation productions for both film and television. In the late 70's, Yasuhiko would turn his attention to the world of comics, as he has since penned nearly two dozen titles since.In 1981 he was awarded the Nebula Award by the Japanese Sci-Fi Association.In 1990 his work Namuji won the Japan Comic Artist Association Grand PrizeAnd in 2000 he took the Japan Media Arts Award for Best Comic with his title A Revolutionary Dog.

This book wraps up all of the back story of the Char and Sayla, Zeon's early use of mobile suits and the first few months of the One Year War. It really does a great job of showing the state of the Earth and Colonies leading up to Char's attack of Side 7. I remember watching the anime when I was younger and didn't fully understand the gravity of the situation (in relation to the events leading up to war and during,) and just how far Zeon was willing to justify their right for independence. Even in other Gundam OVAs as well, you only see bits and pieces of flashbacks or short dialogue alluding to the chaotic events. For instance in Origin, you see Gihren with no remorse order any neighboring colony not in line with Zeon's views, destroyed and one being infamously used in an attempt to destroy Federation HQ in Jaburo. Afterr the failed colony drop you learn just how devastating the colony was for the planet. Also seeing the tragic battle of Loum along, showcasing the Federation's inability to stand toe to toe with Zeon's mobile suit force. Another noteworthy insight is seeing Revil and Degwin discussing the urgent need to end the war before it gets worse, while Revil is a POW in Zeon. Seeing it all play out in book 7 of Mobile Suit Gundam Origin, really helps me to understand the state of affairs for both sides before Amuro and the Gundam come onto the scene. It really is no wonder in my mind why the war couldn't afford (in more ways than one,) to last longer than a full year for Federation and Zeon.

Fantastic! The the never before seen back story arc continues as the events surrounding the Battle of Loum is revealed skillfully by Yaz. Follow Char as he gains recognition and climbs up the ranks in the Zeon military. Follow Sayla as she struggles for a normal life that will be denied to her. Yaz's storytelling brings these two to life. Don't miss out if you call yourself a Gundam fan.

Another excellent volume, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko knocks it out of the park again. This volume covers the first month of the One Year War, a part of the Universal Century's timeline that typically has only been covered in passing and concludes the lengthy flashback that started in volume 5. This volume is a gripping read start to finish and touches on and fleshes out so many great characters. Getting to see Char earn his namesake, the Black Tri-Stars gaining their fearsome reputation, the continuing drama of House Zabi, and of course, Sayla being a badass left me salivating for the next book.The artwork is once again amazing, especially the color pages of Yasuhiko's watercolor work, which paints the beautiful and haunting scenes of the war. The paper and binding quality is consistent with past volumes, which is to say its amazing. If you've been enjoying Gundam: The Origin then buying this volume is a no-brainer. If you love comics, especially manga, give this series a shot and pick up the first volume, its truly fantastic and deserves your support.

The seventh volume of Gundam: The Origin continues the flashbacks by moving to Operation British and then to the Battle of Loum. Char has become a Zeon ace pilot in Mobile Suit combat and participates in the Battle of Loum alongside the Black Tri-Stars and many other characters that would play future roles in the anime series!We finally get to see detailed accounts of the colony drop from Operation British and then the beginning and end of Loum. We've all heard of Char's sinking of 5 ships as well as the Black Tri-Stars capturing General Revil and now we get to see it. Many other characters are present here including Ryu Jose! Garma is constantly trying to keep up with Char's accolades and this ties directly into Garma's last stand with White Base. We also get to see the war brought to Sayla Mass. The book ends where the first book begins thanks to the extra story "On the Eve" and we also get commentary by Mamoru Nagano at the end as an extra feature. Another must-have Gundam release!

Wow is all I can say for this amazing installment of Gundam the Origin. We are now seven volumes into the story and the story is still as good if not better than volume one. This volume covers the events prior to the battle of Loum, the battle of Loum, and the aftermath of the battle itself; which was never shown in the animated series. One of the characters that really stands out in this volume is Sayla Mass, I won't get into any of the details but if you have been following Gundam for a long time you will understand. This volume holds up the quality of all previous volumes with beautiful color pages mixed in with the black and white ones as well as a bonus 8 page section in the end of the book detailing Mamoru Nagano's thoughts on Gundam the Origin. For anyone wondering Mamoru Nagano is a mechs designer from the Mobile suite Zeta Gundam series. I recommend this volume to any Gundam fan.
