Rosemary Sutcliff (1920-1992) wrote dozens of books for young readers, including her award-winning Roman Britain trilogy,The Eagle of the Ninth, The Silver Branch, and The Lantern Bearers, which won the Carnegie Medal.The Eagle of the Ninth is now a major motion picture, The Eagle, directed by Kevin MacDonald and starring Channing Tatum. Born in Surrey, Sutcliff spent her childhood in Malta and on various other naval bases where her father was stationed. At a young age, she contracted Still's Disease, which confined her to a wheelchair for most of her life. Shortly before her death, she was named Commander of the British Empire (CBE) one of Britain's most prestigious honors. She died in West Sussex, England, in 1992.

Nach dem ich 'The Eagle of the Ninth' gelesen hatte, wandte ich mich sofort dem zweiten Teil der Trilogie zu. Während ich den 'Adler' zwar mochte, aber auch die Schwächen des Buches sah, hat 'The Silver Branch' mich auf ganzer Linie überzeugt. Die Geschichte des Caesar Carausius, seines verräterischen Ministers und zweier junger Cousins, die sich gegen Ungerechtigkeit und Willkür einsetzen, wird mitreißend und wirklichkeitsnah erzählt.Mit Flavius und Justin hat Rosemary Stucliff zwei großartige Charaktere geschaffen, mit denen ich mich sofort identifizieren konnte (mehr noch als mit Marcus und Esca aus dem 1. Buch). Die beiden sind keine Helden, sondern Durchschnittsmenschen, die versuchen, sich ihre Loyalitäten zu bewahren und das Richtige zu tun, auch wenn es manchmal ein wenig dauert, herauszufinden, was das überhaupt sein soll.Während mir die Handlung des 1. Teils teilweise recht vorhersehbar erschien, erlebte ich bei 'The Silver Branch' eine wahre Achterbahnfahrt. Mehrfach starrte ich geschockt auf die Seiten, weil ich nicht glauben wollte, was da gerade passiert war. Da ich die geschichtlichen Hintergründe nicht kannte, erwischte mich so manche Handlungswendung eiskalt.Die Konflikte waren glaubhaft und einfühlsam dargestellt. Man hatte nicht, wie im 1. Teil, das Gefühl, dass die Krisen sich wie von selbst auflösten. Flavius und Justin befanden sich mehr als einmal am Rande der Auswegslosigkeit und ich fieberte mit ihnen mit, gespannt darauf, wie (und ob) sie es dieses Mal schaffen würden.Alles in allem kann ich das Buch jeder Altersgruppe empfehlen. Auch wenn man (wie ich) kein englischer Muttersprachler ist, versteht man alles sehr gut und wird mit einem wunderschönen, berührenden Leseerlebnis belohnt. Obwohl das Buch in den 50er Jahren geschrieben wurde und die Geschehnisse darin schon fast 2000 Jahre zurücklegen, ist die Geschichte an sich zeitlos und spricht jede Generation an.

Ich habe dieses Buch als Jugendlicher geliebt und bin nach der aktuellen Verfilmung (auch sehr emfehlenswert) gleich mal auf Buchsuche gegangen. Amazon hat`s!
